Toenail Reconstruction
Restoring confidence with healthy-looking nails

Toenail Reconstruction is a cosmetic and medical solution for individuals with damaged or unsightly toenails due to injury, surgery, or fungal infection. AA Podiatry’s HCPC-registered podiatrists provide safe, professional toenail reconstruction at our Shettleston and Clarkston clinics in Glasgow. Using medical-grade resins, we rebuild a natural-looking cosmetic toenail to improve comfort and confidence after toenail damage from injury, surgery, pressure or infection.

What is toenail reconstruction
Toenail reconstruction is a cosmetic and medical procedure that restores the look and feel of a damaged or missing nail. We use a flexible, medical-grade reconstruction gel (not salon gel) that bonds to the remaining nail or nail bed and can be trimmed, filed and finished—including with gel polish if desired.
Ideal when you have:
-
Partially or fully missing nails after injury or surgery
-
Nails that are thick, misshapen or discoloured (e.g., after fungal infection)
A nail that catches on socks/shoes or causes embarrassment in sandals

What causes toenail damage?
-
Trauma (stubbing, dropping something on the toe)
-
Repetitive pressure from tight footwear or sport
-
After nail surgery if there is undesired regrowth
-
Fungal infection changing nail colour, thickness or shape
-
Medical conditions affecting nail growth
Nail damage isn’t always medically serious—but it can be painful, awkward in shoes and affect confidence and mental well-being. We offer appointments where you can openly discuss your concerns about your toenails and how they look and feel to you.
.
Is toenail damage serious?
Nail damage is often not medically serious, but it can be distressing for cosmetic and psychological reasons. People may feel self-conscious wearing open-toed shoes or avoid certain activities due to the appearance of their toenails. In some cases, damaged nails can also catch on socks or shoes, causing discomfort or further injury. Nail reconstruction offers a safe and aesthetic solution that can greatly improve quality of life.
How does toenail restoration work?
Nail reconstruction is a painless, in-clinic procedure performed by a podiatrist. It involves:
-
Cleaning and preparing the damaged nail area
-
Applying a specially formulated medical-grade resin
-
Sculpting the material to create the shape of a natural nail
-
Curing the resin using a UV light for strength and flexibility
-
Finishing the nail by trimming, shaping, and optionally applying gel polish
The result is a flexible, durable, and natural-looking cosmetic toenail that integrates well with your existing nail bed. The reconstructed nail typically lasts several weeks and can be maintained or redone as needed. Longevity varies with footwear, activity and aftercare
Toenail reconstruction gel vs salon gels?
-
Purpose-built medical resins for feet: flexible, breathable-by-design, and compatible with podiatry debridement.
-
Better adhesion to uneven/damaged nail surfaces.
-
Applied by podiatrists who can safely prepare thick or fragile nails and advise on underlying conditions.
When should I see a podiatrist to reconstruct a toenail?
You should consider Nail Reconstruction if:
-
You have a toenail that is partially or fully missing
-
Your toenail is thickened, misshapen, or discoloured from fungal infections or trauma
-
You want a natural-looking alternative to hiding your nails with regular polish or press-ons
-
You’ve had nail surgery and want to restore the appearance of the toe
-
You’re preparing for a special event or want to feel more confident in sandals or barefoot.
This treatment is suitable for most people and can be done even if a fungal infection is present, depending on the severity. Your podiatrist will assess and advise on the best approach for your individual case.
Can it be done at home?
Short answer: we don’t recommend it.
DIY toenail reconstruction at home risks trapping moisture, aggravating infection, or masking problems that need medical review. Professional assessment ensures the surface is safely prepared and that any fungal/skin issues are addressed first.

Toenail care after reconstruction
A little care helps your new cosmetic nail look natural and last longer. Follow the tips below for comfort, hygiene and durability.
-
Keep the nail dry for the first 24 hours.
-
After washing, dab dry—especially the edges; don’t soak the toe.
-
Wear roomy, supportive footwear; avoid tight/pointed shoes and high-impact sport for 24–48 hours.
-
Avoid long baths, swimming and saunas for prolonged periods to help the reconstructed nail remain durable and last longer.
-
Moisturise the skin around the nail with a gentle emollient; don’t force creams or oils under the nail.
-
Don’t pick or pry the reconstructed nail yourself. If an edge lifts, cover with a small plaster/tape and contact the clinic.
-
If you’ve had fungal nails, keep using your advised antifungal, the podiatrist will direct you on this prior to any treatment.
-
Change socks daily and rotate footwear to keep the toe cool and dry.
-
Nail colour: use non-acetone remover; allow polish-free days. If you choose gel, let us remove it at review.
-
Book your maintenance review (typically at 8 weeks—we’ll confirm your interval).
-
Seek advice if you notice redness, swelling, pain, discharge or any reaction.
When we may advise alternatives or referral (H2)
-
Atypical pigmentation/rapid change in the nail or surrounding skin
-
Active infection or ulceration that needs medical treatment first
-
Significant pain or suspected ingrown nail requiring clinical care
We’ll discuss options and, if needed, arrange GP/dermatology referral.
